The Role of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation in Orofacial, Feeding and Swallowing Disorders Management - Online course
About Course:
This evidence-based training course provides speech-language pathologists and allied health professionals with a comprehensive foundation in the clinical application of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) for the management of orofacial, feeding, and swallowing disorders across the lifespan. Participants will explore the physiological principles of NMES, review current research, and learn to identify appropriate candidates—including those with stroke, head and neck cancer, neurological conditions, and paediatric feeding difficulties. The course emphasises safe, ethical, and effective integration of NMES with traditional therapeutic strategies, supported by hands-on practice in electrode placement and parameter selection for both adult and paediatric populations. Designed for clinicians seeking to enhance functional outcomes, this course bridges theory, evidence, and practical skill to improve patient-centred care in dysphagia rehabilitation.
Course Objectives
- Identify medical conditions for which neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is indicated in the treatment of dysphagia.
- Determine appropriate candidacy criteria for implementing NMES in dysphagia management across patient populations.
- Describe how adjustable NMES parameters (intensity, frequency, pulse width) influence therapeutic efficacy and tailor settings to individual patient needs.
- Explain and justify the integration of traditional swallowing exercises alongside NMES to optimize functional outcomes.
- Perform correct electrode placement techniques for NMES in both adult and pediatric populations through supervised hands-on practice.
- Demonstrate the application of evidence-based therapeutic protocols using NMES for dysphagia in both pediatric and adult patients.
The course will be delivered in Arabic
